When I crank my suv makes loud scratching noise and will not start right away

I crank my suv it makes loud scratching sound and won't crank and I have to re crank it to get the car on
(sounds like when you have the car on and you accidentally crank the car on again)
please help thank you

The starter is not engaging the ring gear on the drive plate, you may have 2 problems here, first the starter will have to be removed and replaced or o. Hauled and secondly you will have to check the teeth on the drive plate as if they are badly warn the new starter will have the same problem, if the ring gear is worn, the transmission must be removed to replace it.
