You may be having the same problems I'm experiencing with my own 1997 Jetta. I've checked other websites for the answer (this one no-one seems to have a clue, all are just looking at the question, but not replying.)
Jetta's are known for not starting after awhile if there is cold or rainy weather or if the car isn't being driven for a period of time. Others from the other site suggest the ' Crank Sensor ' should be replaced; or use ' Wire Dry ' spray to clean/dry the coils connected to the engine/battery cables.
At present I'm trying to get a price check ( crank sensor/computer )for my own car. It does not matter what year your Volkswagon car or its type. They are great cars, once this problem is repaired the car should run smoothly. I'm no professional and certainly not a mechanic, but like I said I checked around.
I suggest you have a mechanic or someone look at to make sure, but it should NOT cost $300.
Good luck and I'll let you and others know what happens to mine.
