For about 10 days on a freeway about 15 minutes going 70 MPH when suddenly, I hear a snap and the truck whinds out and it won't engage into any gear. It sounded like a cable snapped. The shifter is on the floor, and it moves the arms that are attached to the shifter but where they lead to, I do not know.

truck hadn't been driven for over 3 years. I had it running.

Hi,

There really shouldn't have been any pressure on the shift cable to cause it to snap while you were driving. However, the cable runs from the shifter in the vehicle to the driver's side of the transmission.

If you look below, I highlighted the cable. Note that it is referred to as a control cable. Check to see if that is damaged or if the shift lever it is attached to is moving when someone shifts the gears.

If it moves, inspect the driveshaft to make sure one of the universal joints hasn't broken. Also, let me know if there is any noise when you shift it into gear and try moving.

Let me know what you find.

Joe
