While driving heard loud popping noise now transmission will only move in reverse

I was driving and heard a loud popping sound and the truck just stopped pulling. now it will only go in reverse but will not do anything when i put it in drive. i removed the front axle but still no drive. any suggestions? also, i pull the front axle to see if i could drive in two wheel drive only but the same results only reverse.

Sounds like an internal failure in the transmission. if you have reverse you have line pressure in the transmission so the pump is working. this may need to have a transmission specialist do a hands on inspection, but my feeling with the noise you heard is that the transmission is going to need a re build or a second hand unit installed. But get a first hand diagnostic test done first so you know what you are up against.
