Terminate the wire at the chassis earth, just cut that damaged wire of the earth terminal where it bolts to the body, with the new wire to earth this wire is no longer required and with the damaged (burnt section) this old earth may still be shorting out other systems, you would be best advised to cut this wire at the earth point so if it is causing other problems, this will be alleviate, just check the burnt section if you can access it and open the loom and re insulate all the suspect (damaged) wires.

I understand what you mean. I see that it is very hard to get to the loom it is under the dash. Do you think that the brown wire that I grounded is damaged somewhere? Damn this is hard to get at the wire in the loom. Insulate the brown wire or neighboring wires next to the brown wire?

The earth wire is just just that and earth, it wont burn on it's own, what has happened here 9exactly how is unclear) a power wire has contacted the earth causing the high resistance and causing a back feed of current through the earth, with a new earth and the old wire terminated, we have repaired that particular problem, how the power has come in contact with the earth is what needs to be understood, this can be by the loom flexing and chafing against a metal bracket causing the two wires to contact, You said that the loom was burnt? Can you see the scorch marks or is this just an assumption? If you can see the scorched marks on the loom, this will have to be investigated to see if any other wire is affected,

I really cannot see anything at all. All I know is the brown and white wire to the data connector, if grounded makes the van run. I also know that the brown/white wire has continuity from the data link connector area to the grounding point of wires under th ehood on the right hand side. I understand now how it can have continuity and high resistance because a power wire has rubbed into the ground wire now. That is the part that is unclear because all of this wiring is under the dash and really is not subjected to movement. The only thing I did recently before the problem was replace the van's battery and also I worked on the A/C evaporator which is on the right hand side dash.

My 2001 Toyota sienna won't stay running without the code reader plugged in. Mechanic said I need a new ECM $350.00 programmed. I ride around with the reader in. A worrisome ride. Been like this for 2 years now. I want to fix it but I don't fully believe the ECM story. Gotta be something simpler. Ground? I'm sure he checked the relay.

That is a good one. I would replace the ECM please give your VIN number to the rebuilder. The instructions to do so is in the diagrams below. Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what happens.

Good morning,

There is no relay and there is no ground. The data link connector run with serial data lines.

This is most likely the ECM itself that is bad.

Are there any codes set?
