Black smoke rough idle when cold

Probably need to have the carb checked or replaced. The floats could be bad etc. at any rate too much fuel can cause engine damage.

Could be your choke plate sticking-closed

I have a 1984 4x4 that has this same problem. Did you ever figure out what was wrong?
