I don't know what's wrong with my car. I have a 2001 Toyota Corolla, I was driving it on the freeway and I heard some kind of knocking sound under the hood. It won't go over 30 mpg. Someone told me it looks like I might slit a rod or something like that. I'm thinking I need a new motor so I was wondering how much it would cost and what stores could I get it from?

Did you check the engine oil? Engines rarely develop knocking with only 80k miles on it unless the engine oil was unattended and got too low. The best bet would be going with a used motor w/ warranty from a local salvage yard rather than buying new. A new motor would be outrageous.

Make sure it is the engine and not a pulley or waterpump making the noise.

A new engine from Toyota, installed would be into the $7,000 range.
