When I start the car, it makes a grinding sound. Let me describe the sound: imagine that your car is already idling, and you forget that fact, and you turn the key anyway...*that* grinding sound. I just does it for a second when I start it up,then the car starts and acts normally. Is this serious or expensive to fix? Thanks!

Hi there,

The starter ring gear may be damaged, as could be the starter Bendix drive. You will have to remove the starter to inspect the ring rear and if the teeth are damaged the transmission will have to be removed to replace it.
