I have a 1989 toyota corolla which I first purchased about 2 months ago. The first time I started it up it started up fine, but the day after, it started to give me trouble. It would first start up very weak and then turn off. I tried turning it on a few times after it turned off on me with no luck. I pressed the gas before turning it on and it finally went on. This happened to me everyday until I did a tune up, but a few days after the tune up it wouldn't start up at all. The only way my car starts is if I press the gas before turning it on. This is my first car. It runs great once its started. It has never turned off on me once its running and on the road. My problem is just getting it to start up. What do you think this might be?

Your problem may be a faulty idle air control valve. This opens the throttle when cold just like a choke on older cars.

Might want to check the coolant temperature and throttle position sensors and also the MAF-
