Mechanic says leak is coming from the back right area of the engine so has changed the gasket as it was cracked. The car had recently been serviced at Valvoline but was already down 3 quarts after a 800 mile roadtrip so the engine light was on and the oil light had begun flickering. Problem is, after the gasket was replaced, there still is a leak. What could it be? The mechanic says it can be a "variety" of things, our son is now back in college with the car out of town so we would like to have some knowledge as to what to expect. Any info would be appreciated.

Hello
Thanks for the donation.

The oil may be leaking from the rear main engine seal in the rear of the engine, or the oil pan gasket. I am uncertain why the mechanic could not detect the cause of the leak? If there is no visible oil leak (drips on vehicle, spots on ground etc..), then it may be burning the oil internally, usually a sign of a cracked head gasket.

It may also be possible that the mechanic did not follow the correct bolt tightening sequence and torque specifications during installation of new gasket.

So as the mechanic stated, it really could be a "variety" of things, but I am pretty certain that is HIS/HER job to figure that out ;)

If you need further assistance just let me know.
