Treat the airflow meter as a mass air flow (MAF) sensor. If it fails, expect stalling, unstable idle, a poor air-fuel mixture, and low power, often with a stored engine code. Scan for codes and replace the MAF sensor if faulty; the part is typically about $80 to $100.
The owner of a 1999 Toyota 4Runner asked what an airflow meter is and what happens when it fails. The expert explained it is a mass air flow meter that measures airflow by mass. A bad unit can cause stalling, unstable idle, an improper fuel-air mixture, and low power, and it usually sets a code. Replacement parts commonly cost about $80 to $100.
