Timing Belt

I have a 1998 Subaru Outback Wagon, 2.2l engine, automatic transmission with AWD that has 111,000 milles. According to my mechanic, it is time for a timing belt replacement. Question: If the timing belt were to break before I get it repaired, what would be the possible consequences to the engine? Is the 2.2 l engine a free-wheeler like my old Toyota or will there be extensive damage to the valves? Thanks!

Yes,
There will be reasonably serious consequences

But I Believe that subarus are designed so that if the cam belt breaks then it WON'T allow valves & pistons to hit each other causing a real mess.

PLEASE NOTE ON SUBARUS WHEN YOU REPLACE THE TIMING BELT IT IS IMPERATIVE YOU ALSO REPLACE THE IDLERS & TENSIONERS AS WELL AS THE WATERPUMP & THE THERMOSTAT

THE PARTS ALONE COST AROUND THE $600 NZD DOLLAR MARK AS FOR LABOUR I DON'T KNOW AS I HAD MINE CHANGED BY A MECHANIC AFTER HOURS

THANKS
