Will not start after making funny noise

I have the four door sedan DOHC model. It starting making a funny noise (like a rough idling diesel). After making this noise for a day, it then wont start. My dad took the engine apart and it seems the head is damaged and the timing chain is broken (very loose). Everywhere around wants $200.00 to $500.00 for just the head. My question is an new engine is $300.00. Would it be worth replacing the engine on the car?

That engine is an interference engine. As such it likely has bent valves at the least. A used engine in good shape for $300.00 would probably be a better deal. The other option is a good head and possibly other parts depending on how hard the valves hit.
