Starting from an overnight rest in the driveway, my Saturn L200 did this: twice while braking within a few minutes, going from around 20mph to stop, I heard a scraping squealing noise that was obviously associated with the brakes.

However, this is first that I have heard it and it has not made any noise whatsoever since then despite me using the brakes in all sorts of different situations on a 25 mile commute. The actuall braking never seemed to be affected.

Brakes gone? Freak occurance?

Chances are that you simply picked up a piece flotsam. After a bit it was expelled.

If you were to hear a constant sqeaking/squeeling at low speed that ended when the brakes are applied your disc brake pads are worn down to the sensor.

I can't overstate the importance of proprely functioning brakes! Take a moment to do or have done a visual inspection with the tire removed. I take a good look every time I rotate my tires.

Good luck and let us know if it returns. :)

Suggested Repair

The one-time scraping squeal was likely road debris that was expelled. If a constant low-speed squeal returns and stops when the brakes are applied, the pads may be worn to the wear sensor. Visually inspect the brakes with a wheel removed, or have them inspected, and recheck if the noise returns.

Conversation Summary

The owner of a Saturn L200 heard a scraping squeal twice while braking from about 20 mph after an overnight rest. Braking performance was unaffected, and the noise did not return during a 25-mile commute. The expert said a piece of debris was likely picked up and then expelled. Constant low-speed squealing that stops when the brakes are applied would indicate pads worn to the sensor. A visual brake inspection with a tire removed was recommended, with follow-up if the noise returns.
