About 2 months ago, I was on my way home from one of my 12 hour shifts at my job and my vehicle suddenly lost most of its power (I know now that it went into limp mode). I barely made it back to my house. The next day I went to start our vehicle and it would just crank and crank and crank without any sort of startup. I plugged my scanner in, and I had 13 DTC's. Mostly all misfire codes had the cam shaft sensor one too. So, I bought a new cam shaft position sensor. Installed it. Replaced the spark plugs, ohmed the coils and ignition coil leads, all came back within range. I cranked the vehicle again and we started right up. Drove great for about 2 weeks, then the same thing happened, but this time it's been down for almost a week and half, and I cannot figure it out. I'm getting p0300, p0301, p0302, p0303, p0304.
I replaced all the ignition coils, replaced the ignition coil leads, re grounded all the body and frame grounds, tested the crankshaft position sensor (came back within range), checked all the hoses for leaks, dry rot. Replaced the PVC valve and hoses, cleaned the throttle body, new spark plugs again, replaced valve cover gasket, tested the 02 sensors, cleaned the injectors, umm what else. But now my vehicle will crank, crank and then want to start up for a few seconds and then bogs down and shuts off.

I am completely lost at what to do.

I'm about to make sure my ECM is properly connected and all of that sort.

Thank you for your time.

Hi,

Have you checked fuel pressure? Will it start if you use starting fluid and then stall again? If you haven't tried that, see what happens. If it starts and then stalls, it's a fuel-related issue. If there is no change, check to see if the plugs are getting spark. However, it sounds like the fuel pressure may be low.

Here is a link to check fuel pressure. You will need a fuel pressure gauge, but most parts stores will lend one to you.

I attached the manufacturer's fuel pressure specifications below for you.

Try this and let me know what you find.

Take care,

Joe

Hello Joe,

I can't believe I didn't even think about checking the fuel pump. There's been a whining noise from up front thus whole time, I should have put 2 n 2 together.
She won't even attempt to start until I hit the gas pedal a few times too.
I looked at the fuel rail a few mins ago and I noticed that it's missing the black plastic piece. It goes over the vibration damper (I think that's what it's called).
I'm hoping that the fuel pump access location isn't on the driver's side rear back seat because that seat is welded there (whoever owned the rav4 before us did it).

Thank you, Joe, for your time.

Hi,

You are very welcome. Let me know what you find.

As far as the pump, it is accessed via the port under the rear seat. I'm not sure why that would be welded shut. If you need to access the pump, the tank will need to be removed or the original test port will need to cut back out where welded.

I attached directions from the manual specific to this vehicle. It indicates to use a scan tool to actuate the pump, but it gives an option if you don't have one.

Let me know if this helps.

Joe
