What is the solenoid/sensor attached to my pump inline with the high pressure line?Any pump replace video I can find online? The truck in the video does not have it. I cannot get it off old pump to swap over and I would like to replace it anyway to eliminate a possible weak link. I spoke to GM and the parts guy said it is a superseded part. Any information?

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.

Here is a video to show you the job with instructions below to help you as well.

I believe you are referring to the pump flow control valve. Here are the directions. The attached picture correlates with these directions.

Power Steering Pump Flow Control Valve Actuator Replacement - On Vehicle

Disassembly Procedure

1. Remove the electrical connector from the variable assist steering actuator (1).
2. Remove pump assembly from the vehicle, if the variable assist steering actuator (1) is not accessible.
3. Remove the retaining ring (2) from the variable assist steering actuator (1).

Important: Note the orientation of the variable assist steering actuator discharge fitting.

4. Remove the variable assist steering actuator (1).
5. Remove the O-ring seal from the variable assist steering actuator.

Assembly Procedure

Important: Note the orientation of the variable assist steering actuator discharge fitting.

1. Lubricate and install the new O-ring seal with power steering fluid.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

2. Install the variable assist steering actuator (1) to the pump assembly.
Tighten the actuator to 62 Nm (46 ft. lbs.).
3. Install the negative battery cable.

Important: If a new variable assist steering actuator (1) is being installed, position the electrical connector before installing the retaining ring (2).

4. Install the electrical connector to the variable assist steering actuator (1).
5. Install the retaining ring (2) to the variable assist steering actuator (1).

You can find a new or rebuilt unit from Amazon or Rockauto.com

Let me know if this is the part you are referring to and if this helps. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

You were exactly correct the shaft on the power steering unit is sheared. I can not find a power steering pump with the EVO electrical plug receiver on.
Does the EVO inlet from the old pump thread off? Can I thread it onto the new unit? A GM dealer told me my GM pump part no. 26069033 has been discontinued. Maybe I'm asking the wrong questions but all I can find is the pump without the EVO (what I call the electronic plug attachment) on the unit. What are my options.
Thanks for the great diagnosis!!!

That is the valve that controls the pump pressure at times when in use.

Steering problem
1999 Chevy Suburban V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

in regards to 1999 GMC 1500 pickup, mileage: 58,000-just a note I had the same exact thing happening to me making rights onto the freeway. Scary. I had checked the level it looked all right, but when I added just a little bit more it worked fine. My question is what is the sensor for on steering pump.

My question is what is the sensor for on steering pump.

Probably part of the EVO system, electronic variable orifice. There is probably a sensor located at the base of steering column, reacts to shaft position and speed. Helps with power steering assist. Some of the others can probably explain it better than I.

Removal
Remove the engine air cleaner assembly.
Remove the drive belt. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the steering gear.
WARNING:The electrical power to the air suspension system must be shut off prior to hoisting, jacking or towing an air suspension vehicle. This can be accomplished by turning off the air suspension switch located in the right kick panel area. Failure to do so can result in unexpected inflation or deflation of the air springs, which can result in shifting of the vehicle during these operations.

Raise the vehicle.
On 4WD vehicles, rthe six bolts. Remove the skid plate..
Disconnect the power steering reservoir pump hose from the power steering pump. Drain the power steering fluid reservoir.
Remove the upper power steering pump bolts.

NOTE:Early build 4.6L and 5.4L engines may have two lower power steering pump bolts; the second bolt may be discarded upon removal of the power steering pump.

Remove the lower power steering pump bolt and remove the power steering pump.
NOTE:Secure the power steering pump in a vise.

Loosen the power steering pressure hose fitting. Remove the power steering pressure hose.

Installation
Install the power steering seal by stretching the seal over the Seal Replacer (D90P-3517-A) until it is large enough to slip over the tube nut.
Position the power steering pressure hose into the pump. Tighten the pressure hose fitting to specification.
Position the power steering pump and loosely install the power steering pump bolts.
Tighten the power steering pump upper and lower bolts to specification.
On 4WD vehicles, install the skid plate and tighten the bolts to specification.
Connect the power steering reservoir pump hose to the power steering pump.
NOTE:If equipped with air suspension, reactivate the system by turning on the air suspension switch.

Lower the vehicle.
Connect the power steering pressure hose to the steering gear. Tighten to specification.
Install the drive belt.
Install the engine air cleaner assembly.
Fill and leak check the system
