i own a 1991 grand am 116k lately i have noticed a weird noise when i turn right, it kind of sounds like a scratching almost as if there is a tree branch stuck under the car. i have asked my mechanic about it and he thought maybe the rack and pinion was starting to go, but he wasn't sure because of course the car didn't make the noise when he drove it.

This is a known problem with Bonneville's. It is either the rack of pinion or the power steering fluid level might be low.

Conversation Summary

The owner of a 1991 Pontiac Grand Am reported a scratching or scraping noise when turning right. A mechanic suspected the rack and pinion but could not confirm it because the noise did not occur during the test drive. An expert said the cause could be a failing rack and pinion or low power steering fluid, and estimated rack and pinion replacement at about $800 USD, while noting uncertainty about prices in Canada.
