Electrical problem
1996 Plymouth Voyager V6 Front Wheel Drive Automatic 376000 miles

I have a written log, since April 2006 (although the problem has been around for years), of when my vehicle simply refuses to start (8 times) or stalls while driving (30 times). It has happened during all seasons and at different times throughout the day. Occasionally when I attempt to start the vehicle nothing happens. All electric items appear to work (fan, radio, lights, etc.) But the starter doesn't engage. No sound at all when I turn the key. I wait five minutes, ten minutes, 30 minutes and it will start. Worst case so far logged was no starting for a few hours after multiple attempts but started next day. More troubling, the vehicle will occasionally stall while I'm driving. The needles fall to zero and the engine turns off. I have had codes checked after a recovery and there were none. In fact, the information appears to have been deleted (ie. Number of starts since last reset, etc.). The stalling whil driving happened four times just last Friday alone! However, from March to November it never happened once! Many things have been replaced over the years to no avail.

The van stalled again this morning and still wouldn't start after four hours. It was towed to a dealer and for the first time in ten years (that's how long, intermittently, the vehicle has been doing this) it was still in fail mode when it arrived. Dealership is working on it and I'll report what happens. They suspect an intermittent problem with the crank sensor. What does this do and would a fault of it cause the problems I described?

Unfortunately the dealer didn't work on it to completion. The tech came in this morning and the van started. There were no codes while the van was in fail mode though. I knew this would be the case though as it always happens that way. (As an aside. With no codes, does that mean the problem is with something the computer doesn't monitor?) I have left the vehicle with them to drive for a few days and hopefully it will fail. It has failed on 6 different days this months alone so hopefully it will again.

I asked about the auto shutdown relay and the tech said the same as your reply about the crank sensor. That the relay would shut down the injectors or fuel pump but wouldn't prevent cranking. Is that correct?

Because of my detailed written log of the last two years, plus receipts from other dealers listing the same problem from as far back as seven years ago, the dealership has intimated that they might be willing to take the problem to Chrysler for assistance. I'll reply again to report what happens.
