Overheating

First, make sure the coolant level is full. When the engine is cold, check both the overflow bottle and the radiator.

If the coolant is full, I need to know if the overheating happens at highway speed or only in stop and go traffic. If it doesn't matter, make sure the cooling fan is turning on. If it is, the coolant is full, and overheating happens under any condition, suspect a bad thermostat.

If you do replace the thermostat, I would at the same time, flush the cooling system.

If it has been overheating for a while I suspect that your vehicle could have a blown head gasket. This happens because when your vehicle gets hot as it cools the aluminum cylinder head cools at a different rate the the iron block and tends to warp. As this happens repeatedly, the warpage gets more and more pronounced, and you get a spot where the head gasket fails. How is the level of your coolant? Also could you please check your engine oil dipstick and tell us what the color of the oil is. We need to know if it is black or if it looks like coffee with creamer in it.
