I have replaced the starter, battery, spark plugs, and starter wires. Whenever I go to start it all I get is a click from the starter. My gauges also don’t show what gear I’m in, but I am able to put my car into whatever gear. Before it stopped starting, I was having problems putting it in park. I’d have to shove it up to get it to recognize what gear it was in so I could take the key out. I believe it’s the neutral safety switch, but transmissions are not my forte. Any help or second opinions are very welcome. Thank you.

Hi,

If the starter won't engage, see if it will start in neutral. If there is no change and the gear indicator light isn't working, we may have a faulty transmission range sensor.

Try this. When you try to start it and hear the click, take note if the lights in or outside the vehicle dim and let me know.

Next, I attached the starter circuit wiring schematic. I need you to check the starter fuse (40 amp) in the under-hood fuse box first. Also, remove the starter relay and switch it with a different one in the box that has the same part number and try it.

If everything checks good, I need you to go to the starter motor. There is a heavy gauge red wire that is direct from the battery and has power at all times. Confirm that first. If that is good, there is a smaller gauge purple wire on the starter as well. That wire only gets power when the key is in the start position. Have a helper turn the key to the start position while you check for voltage to that wire.

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions. Also, does the click you hear come from the starter motor?

Let me know.

Joe

See pics below. Note: I cut the original pic in two so you could read them. They are overlapped so you can follow from one to the next. The last pic shows the fuse and relay in the under-hood fuse box.

Thank you! I have already tried those troubleshooting methods, I just forgot to mention them. But all the lights do dim whenever I try to turn it over. Both inside and outside lights.

Hi,

No problem. If the lights dim and you confirmed there is power to the starter motor, either we have a faulty starter motor, or the engine is locked.

I realize the starter and battery, so it should crank. So, we need to make sure the engine isn't locked, and the starter just can't turn it.

At the crankshaft pulley, attach a socket to the center bolt and a breaker bar. (See pic 1) See if you are able to turn the engine.

Let me know.

Joe

The engine is not locked up. It does spin with a little elbow grease.

Hi,

That is good news. Since the lights dim when the starter engages and the engine isn't locked, I would remove the starter and have it bench tested. If it gets power and doesn't turn the engine, other than a loose connection, the starter is my first suspect.

Let me know.
