I have fire going to the coil but no fire going to distributor. If I put a test light coming out of the coil that lights up but if I put the coil wire to something that is not sparking.

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros. Com.

If you have no spark but there is power at the coil, it sounds like the pick-up coil is bad. Here are directions for replacement. It is in the distributor and takes about fifteen minutes to replace.

_

HALL EFFECT PICK-UP ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT (3.9L Engine)

REMOVAL

1. Remove distributor cap. See Distributor Removal and Installation 3.9L Engine.
See: Distributor, Ignition > Procedures > Distributor - 3.9L Engine

Ignition Rotor Removal And Installation - 3.9L Engine
2. Remove ignition rotor from distributor shaft.

Hall Effect Pick-Up Assembly Removal And Installation - 3.9L Engine
3. Remove two hall effect pick-up attaching screws on opposite sides of the distributor housing and carefully lift the hall effect pick-up assembly from the distributor housing.

INSTALLATION

1. To reinstall hall effect pick-up assembly, follow the preceding procedure in reverse
order.

If you want to confirm the pick - up coil is the issue, here are the testing instructions.

6F Voltage Supply to Distributor Pick-Up
Vehicle Power-train Management Computers and Control Systems Testing and Inspection Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures No Start Test No Start (NS) Tests 6F Voltage Supply to Distributor Pick-Up
6F VOLTAGE SUPPLY TO DISTRIBUTOR PICK-UP
1. Connect voltmeter between cavity 1 of distributor engine harness connector and ground.
2. If voltmeter reading is within one volt of battery voltage, replace distributor pickup assembly.

No problem. I will watch for your reply. By the way, I have owned many of the first gen Dakota trucks. The pick up only left me down once. No spark/no run.

I have a feeling that is the issue.

Yep. They are great trucks. The sad part is in PA they rusted away like everything else. I attached a picture of the last one I had. I restored it from the ground up. I hate doing body work and paint, but figured it was worth it. Sold it because I got tired of repairing the frame.

This is the one that had the no spark issue and it was the only time it left me down. The pick up coil got old and tired. Replaced it and it started right up and ran perfect until it was sold a year later.

As long as everything is turning properly, just clean it up as best as you can.

Interesting. Okay, before we do anything more, have you checked to see if there are diagnostic trouble codes stored in the computer? Here is a link that shows how to do it. You do not need a scanner.

I figured out what was wrong with it. I did not plug the pick up Cole in good. I had a little issue getting fuel to it had to clean the lines out. I did take it for the first drive in about two years today. Now I have to get it tagged and insured, put some miles on it to insurer it is fixed. Thanks for all your help.

Welcome back.

I am glad to hear you got it going. What you did is an easy mistake. When things get old, they do not go together as easily. Regardless, I am glad to hear it is running. The more you drive it, chances are the better it will run.

Let me know if you have questions in the future.

Take care,
Joe

Next project is a 1995 Astro van runs great. It was parked about four years, now transmission will not shift. There was nothing wrong with it when it was parked. All It needed was tires. Any suggestions? It has a 4.3 two wheel drive has a 4 L 60 e transmission in it.

I hate to say it, but I need you to start a new thread. The owner of the site wants different vehicles / problems separated.

Make sure the fluid is clean and full to start. Also, indicate if the transmission goes into gear and moves the vehicle, regardless of shifting. I will watch for a new thread on this question and try to grab it.

Take care,
Joe
