When driving forward, does the transmission shift through all of the gears? Does it operate normally otherwise? If so, you probably have a broken rear band. This would be an internal problem that would require transmission disassembly to repair.

Hi there,

This is a common problem, I see this question posted here often, nearly all are a internal transmission mechanical failure, you should get this to a transmission specialist, toe it in do not drive as you may do more damage, first thing that they should do is scan the ECU and make sure that it is not an electrical problem, best to make sure first.

Good afternoon, I just had my transmission repaired at a local shop. The reverse band had broke. Now it is slamming into reverse. The shop says that it has something to do with a ground problem between the computer and the tranny. Could this be the problem or is he BSin me?

Before I read that you had it repaired, I was thinking of the tcm (Trans Control Module). However, he may have not properly adjusted the band that he replaced. Since the work was just done, I would ask him to recheck that he properly adjusted the band.

Let me know what you find.

The transmission was repaired by a proper tranny shop, so I would imagine that the band was adjusted properly. Where is the trans control module located?

I found this TSB. Take a look at it and let me know if you experience any of the problems.

TSB data for: 1998 FORD EXPLORER
Bulletin Number: 9987
Sequence Number: 621290
Date: 19990527
Component Name: 103100 POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:CONTROL MODULE (TCM, PCM)
Make: FORD
Model: EXPLORER
Year: 1998
Summary:
SOME VEHICLES MAY EXHIBIT HARSH DOWNSHIFT FROM 3RD TO 1ST GEAR WHILE STOPPING, HESITATION AFTER ACCELERATION FROM STOP AND / OR LACK OF POWER AFTER ACCELERATION FROM STOP ON VEHICLES WITH 4.0L OR 5.0L ENGINES.

As far as the TCM, I believe it is mounted on the transmission.

Recently, my car can't reverse smoothly, specially in morning, first time reverse car. I have to wait 20-30 seconds to get revese force after engine starts. After I drive a while, if I try to reverse again, it is fine, or just wait 1-2 seconds to get reverse force.

Hi:
Chances are the o-rings and seals are getting hard. As a result, the trans fluid bypasses the seal. Thus, it takes longer for it to shift. As the vehicle warms us, they soften and start working again.

Ask at the local parts store of they have something that will take care of it. Let me know what you find.

Has the check engine light come on? Also, is the ATF full and clean?

Let me know. THis sounds like an internal problem, but I just want to know about the questions I asked.

Hello,

It sounds like the rear differential has gone out. To be sure lets jack up the rear of the vehicle and remove the drive shaft. here are two guides to help you do the job:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/jack-up-and-lift-your-car-safely

and

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-remove-a-drive-shaft

once the drive shaft is off see if you can turn the pinon yoke it should move both ways easily. Can you please shoot a quick video with your phone so we can see what's going on? that would be great. You can upload it here with your response.

I could try tohelp but need more information. Does it drive all right going forward? When put in reverse what does it do and does it make any noise. How long has this been going on? Have any work been done on the transmission? With you just saying it won't back up does not give me a lot to work with.
Get back to me.
Mike
