I was backing out of my parking space at work when I heard a loud pop. I got out to check for whatever it was I ran over, but nothing was there. I backed out and drove my truck home with no problem. Ten minutes later, when I tried to back out of my garage, the truck would not go into reverse. It drives fine and the other gears shift smoothly. One mechanic said the transmission isnt the problem, I need a complete rear end/drive axle (?). Another mechanic said I need to have the transmission rebuilt. Which is more likely? And is a 7 yr old truck with such high mileage worth the repair?

More likly the tranny, if it goes in drive and moves, the rear axle, thu it might need work, isnt the reason for lost reverse! Rebuilding transmissions today runs 2-3 thousand dollars. You call, you know the history.

Check the following: fluid level, shift linkage, low line control pressure, filter assembly (plugged), valve body (sticking valves), incorrectly tightened valve body bolts (cross-leaks), low-reverse servo (damaged), pump assembly, low-reverse clutch and low-reverse clutch band.

Has the check engine light come on? THere is a transmission control module (TCM) on the transmission. Its own computer that could be causing this. However, it will usually set a code.
Let me know.

For some reason my explorer wont reverse, it shifts into all of the other gears fine, it also shifts into reverse but when I hit the accelerator I only get engine reving. All in all the car wont budge, its been a serious hassle with parking, u-turns, etc. I was told if could be the lever arm but it seems to be in place. Thanks for any advice

Honestly, it could be a linkage issue; however, if all the other gears work properly, there is a slim chance that is the problem. Did this happen all at once?

The part should be under 100.00, but the trans needs removed and torn down to replace it. Since I'm not there, have a trans tech double check it before recommending they just jump into it.

hi there, a friend of ours has a 1999 ford explorer. The vehicle move in drive but does not move in reverse. Is it a transmission problem or can it be something else?

Chances are there is a problem within the valve body in the transmission. The clutch pack for first gear is the same one used for reverse. If it is going into drive but not reverse, my first guess is the valve body.

No reverse large clunk when ii originally put it in reverse then nothing. I had the fluid and filter replaced and the neutral safety switch. Found two small cylindrical bearings in the pan. Does it need a complete rebuild?

Hi there,
You do have to get this transmission stripped down, not sure what the bits are that you found but it will not be good news, best get it seen to and do not drive in forward as metal particles will be deposited around the transmission causing further damage if left to long.

There is no question about it, this is a transmission issue. If you can get someone in there to rebuild it that would correct the issue. When the reverse goes out it is because that drum is bad. However this is not an easy task to tackle because it requires getting in to the transmission. Hope this helps.
