No acceleration, RPMs will not exceed 2,000?

Hi all,

I am having trouble with my vehicle listed above 258 automatic. I had to adjust the carburetor and timing to get vehicle to pass emissions. It passed, but they sure drove it hard and on the way home something happened. I'm not sure what, but I lost virtually all acceleration in a moment. All of a sudden, no guts and a very choking sound. I could barely get up the slight hill and back to the house.

Subsequently I have worked re-adjusted the carburetor and timing and the car idles great, but once the RPMs reach about 1,800 it starts to gasp - and really struggles to get RPMs any higher than that. This happens in both neutral and when driving. When driving there is no acceleration (or power) - I can barely get it out of first gear (automatic). Anytime the carburetor is opened up (let alone WOT) it peaks out and I start to get almost a back flow sound. I have attached a video for reference. (Shown in first reply). Very throaty, almost choking sound. Just bogs down.

I've replaced the fuel filter, replaced oil pressure sensor, replaced distributor cap (only cap) and checked for any major vacuum leaks (none) not saying there isn't something leaking under the exhaust manifold, but I just can't get there to check. Checked temperature on catalytic converter and it doesn't seem to be blocked. No oil leaks, no back flow air into the radiator (no bubbles). Doesn't seem to be any missing or depleting radiator fluid (haven't driven much since incident) and not leaking that I can discern around manifolds or head gasket.

Thoughts? Thanks for all your help!

A couple additional photos of the open engine. Hope this help. Picture shows distributer vacuum advance going to ported vacuum (pulls 0 at idle and jumps at WOT) but I have moved it to full manifold vacuum (pulls about 15 at idle and drops at WOT) With either setting I have adjusted timing and idle accordingly to get optimum idle results - but still no change in outcome of engine performance. Have spray cleaned carburetor but have not pulled jets at this point.

Hi,

We have a guy that is excellent with jeeps. I was hoping he would reply, but I noticed it has been over a day, so I thought I would give it a shot.

I had an 84 and it did a similar thing. The carb itself came loose from the base plate. Have you checked around that area for any leaks?

Let me know. Hopefully, CJ will jump in as well.

Take care,

Joe

Things may not work as they did when it was younger.

Like J&N said maybe your carburetor has gotten loose, the anchor bolts or the screws that hold it all together.

Here's something I saw happen once (I made this pic to show it)

Maybe they did this when they were testing.

The EGR gets "exhausted up" with residue. It may stick "open"

especially if someone "helps" it move further than it usually does. In my pic,

the diaphragm is being forced to move.

(Into the crusty zone)

I saw a guy do this and it took a lot of "playing with it" to make it drop back into it's normal resting position (closed)

Where you are, the EGR may be a requirement, where I am, I eliminated it all together. I run headers on my 258

If you think it has been left alone---you leave it alone too!

I see your valve cover fresh air is pointing towards the passenger side,

then out of the shot, it should be able to suck in air filtered air from the breather
