It has to do with the Controller area network (CAN) Communication line not making a connection with other module(s). It means one of the computers is not talking to the network. Two of the most like scenarios is a blow fuse or a bad computer. I would try checking all of the fuses, here is a guide and diagrams to help us get it fixed.

There is an ECM relay that could have gone out as well. There are many fuses that run the CAN so make sure you check them all with the key on.

Check the diagrams below.

If all checks okay try a used ECM and plug it in.

It really is astounding how the complexity has changed the last 30 years, not to mention the difficulty of getting information not to mention the correct information on these things.

Manufactures have to allow access to the information they have by law. As I understand it, bad information is released too. It is updated at a later time through a TSB.
