I have the truck listed above with a 1993 22R-E engine. I cannot get the engine plate off, it will not go over the flange that the flywheel bolts to. How do I get it off so I can replace the rear main oil seal?

What do I need to do? Enclosing picture.

Sergeant,

You have to love Toyota and their earlier service manuals. You should be able to do this in 4 steps according to them. Remove engine. Remove seal, Apply grease, install engine. Done.

Looks like this engine is not a Gen 3 (not sure on cut off years) but the later generations of this engine have a backing plate that goes over that flange. Take a look at the picture below. I am not sure why this is but I am not a Toyota guy so I am sure there are people out there that know why this one came with that backing plate and the others that I am seeing have the larger opening.

Also here is a guide that will help with doing this as it has more detail on how to do this once you get the backing plate off:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/crankshaft-main-seal-replacement-rear

You will have to use a 3 jaw puller and pull that flange off. However, if it were me, I would try and cut that off and then replace the seal and replace that backing plate with the one that has the larger opening.

The only thing that gives me pause is that is not anywhere in the manual, nor on any of the other 22RE engines that I am finding. They all have the larger opening.

Do you know what vehicle this 22 came out of? Any chance it was a 4 Runner?

Good morning Sir,

I have talked to the gentleman that owned the 1987 Toyota 4x4 pickup, the engine came out of a 1993 two-wheel drive. He took the 93 Engine and put it in the 1987 4x4 pickup he found. He has nothing but problems with the starter engaging the flywheel, I latter found out the clutch and flywheel was for a 1983 Toyota pickup.
I did some research and I found out that the flywheel he put in will not work with 1993 22R-E. I removed the transmission so I could install a clutch and flywheel that’s made for my truck. The old flywheel I took out I could see where the starter was hitting the edge of the flywheel. When I removed the transmission there was oil all over the housing, so I figured I would change it while I had the transmission out.
I’m replacing the bearings with new ones, the flange where the flywheel bolts, will I be able to replace the bearings. I have a puller; can you show me the one you’re talking about. I take it that I can put the bolt in the middle hole of the flange and tighten the bolt to remove the flange. When I reinstall, the flange can I use a flat piece of wood to make sure it goes even when I hammer it.

Thanks,

Larry Triplett

That is great info. Yes, you need to use a jaw type puller as that would be the easiest but any puller that pushes on the center of the flange will work.

Take a look at the picture below. You need to be sure to use the flat center attachment because if you use the pointed one that can damage the pilot bearing or opening for the bearing in the end of the crank.

The flat one will just spread the force out and not do any damage.
