No heat and engine over heating

I have a 1999 Mercury Sable, 130,000 miles. Yesterday, our thermostat gage started going hot and then cold and then hot, plus we had cold air blowing out of the heater vents. We changed the thermostat but it didn't do the trick. What else could this possibly be?

You hsould bleed the coolant system after you change the thermostat.
