2000 Mercury Sable engine problems

Driving my car normally with no warning, or warning lights coming on the engine starts choking. Then it just stops, it will crank but will not start. IT happens when I drive the car for 30 or 40 miles, then I have let the car set, for 1 or 2 hours till it cools down.I disconnect the ground from the battery, it seems to work. I have heard doing that resest the computer. I also have changed the fuel filter, no help. Again there are no warning lights on the dash, that come on.I have even used staring fluid no help. Same thing has happened 5 or 6 times cannot figure this out.

Starting fluid did not start the engine
that will eliminate fuel and fuel pump problem
and next step is to check for spark and also check for codes

Crankshaft position censor. I had the same issue. If it fouls out or the magnet on the tip is dirty it wont know where cyclinder 1 is and your car wont have any spark.
