My car cranks but will not start. Thought it could be a fuel problem, changed fuel filter and gas was in the line past the filter. It had a stutter when it starts and for about the first two miles of travel, then it would run fine. Check engine light was on. Now, no check engine light and just will not start. Hooked up diagnostic to plug and got nothing, would not even power the the diagnostic.

Hi Natos, Welcome to 2CarPros.com
Check engine light coming on.

Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis, finding out what's going on-let me know

Is there any way to check if my whole computer is bad?
The fact that the diagnostic would not power up when connected to the plug in the Kia has me thinking that it could be electrical.
All my fuses are good.
Is there a way to test the fuel pump without removing it? The screws holding it in are rusted and I will have to drill them out to remove the pump.

You have to bring it in to the dealership to test the computer for the fuel pump. If you can hear it coming on, check the fuel pressure with a gauge to rule it out. Here is a link on how to check the fuel pressure.

Help!

I just replaced a blown head gasket on a 2000 Kia Sportage, aligned camshaft pulleys (dual cams) alignment marks (I on left pulley, E on right pulley) along with crankshaft alignment marks. Injectors are squirting gas, layed number one plug on engine, could see spark at plug tip while turning over, battery fully charged, just will not start or even seem like it is trying to catch. Any suggestion? Any ideas, any help would be appreciated.

If you have fuel and spark, it should run unless the timing is out (it sounds like you did it right) or there is low compression like the timing is off. Here is a guide to help confirm the issue:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-test-engine-compression

If low here is a guide to help you double check the marks:

https://www.2carpros.com/diagrams/kia/sportage/2000

I want you to do a compression test on the vehicle to see if it is low. If it is, it could be a timing problem or the head gasket/head may need looked at again.

Let me know what you find.
Joe

The car had trouble starting the last couple days, today when I tried to start it I heard a slow, faint cranking sound twice then nothing. I was going to test the starter solenoid voltage and try the old tap on starter procedure. When we tried to start the car we noticed there seemed to be a lot of smoke coming from the starter. Should I replace the starter or look elsewhere?

If there was smoke from the starter, check to make sure the wiring to it is not damaged. If it is good, remove the starter and have it checked. It sounds bad. Note: Disconnect the battery before you work on the starter.

If you have the four cylinder you will have to remove the intake manifold support bracket and emissions canister in engine compartment to remove starter. Have fun. Also, double check the starter Bendix tooth pattern make sure they are the same, not close. I had to replace the flywheel because I did not double check.

Check battery for condition including load test then check for master fuse blown. See picture and use a test light or volt meter to see if going through it or not. Then try resetting security system see link.

My car shut off on me at a red light and will not start back up. The lights and radio work so it cannot be the problem.

Check battery for condition including load test auto parts do for free. If you mean it turns over but will not run then scan for codes and check fuel pressure with a gauge auto parts rent it.

It was running fine in December but the battery died and ever since then it will not start. It has been at the mechanic since December and the mechanic said when you spray carburetor spray on it the car will start and run until it all dries.

If it runs when sprayed you need to check the fuel system to see if it is getting gas and if not. Why, fuel pump, fuse, relay etc.
