could be a clutch release bearing or a bearing inside the transmission however an over adjusted clutch could have caused the release bearing to have faulted or if when you are driving you leave your foot on the clutch pedal effectively "riding the clutch" which is what sounds like you problem is though some might disagree with me on this i have seen many clutchs release bearings that fail but still work when you push on the clutch you really dont wanna mess with this unless you have worked on clutch's or standard trnsmissions before take it to a transmission shop best bet i hope this helps

Suggested Repair

Have a transmission shop inspect the clutch release bearing and a possible internal transmission bearing. Riding the clutch or an over-adjusted clutch may have caused the failure. Do not attempt the repair unless experienced with clutches and manual transmissions.

Conversation Summary

The owner of a 1996 Kia Sephia reports a grinding metal noise from the clutch area whether the pedal is pressed or not, while the clutch still operates. The expert suggests a failed clutch release bearing or an internal transmission bearing, possibly from an over-adjusted clutch or riding the clutch, and recommends taking it to a transmission shop rather than attempting a DIY repair.
