USUALLY WHEN AN AUTOMOBILE IS SERVICED, THE TRANSMISSION IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE SERVICE. THEREFORE IT COULD POSSIBLY BE A NEGLECTED TRANSMISSION. DID YOU MANUALLY PLACE THE CAR IN 2ND GEAR TO GET HOME? MANUALLY PLACED WITH THE GEAR SHIFTER WOULD PREVENT THE TRANSMISSION FROM REACHING 3RD GEAR HENCE THE LOW MPH YOU WERE ABLE TO OBTAIN. WITH THE ENGINE COLD, CK THE TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL. IF THE LEVEL IS IN THE CROSSHATCHED SECTION OF THE STICK AND THE FLUID IS RED WITH NO SMELL, IT IS NORMAL. BUT WITH WHAT YOU DESCRIBED, I WOULD SAY THE FLUILD IS LOW, BROWN, AND SMELLS BURNT. YOU WILL NEED A TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER CHANGE AND LUCK. IF THIS DOESNT IMPROVE THEN MAJOR TRANSMISSION WORK IS LIKELY.
