I have a 88 Jeep Cherokee w/4.0L I6
When I start it, it will sometimes idle really high then if I give it a second will idle back down to the correct rpm. However, the other day it started to idle high while in drive as well. I had problems with the throttle sticking before but I checked it on the engine and it seemed fine. Could this be a vacuum leak, have yet to check for those, or some other type of problem?

Usually a vacuum leak around the intake manifold or the throttle body.

if its not the vacc line, check the choke assembly she may be sticking, as well as the butterfly valve. then your fuel mixture screws.
