Headlight problem

Last fall, when driving, my headlights would intermittently fail, and come back on after a few seconds. Soon after, whenever I pulled the lever to turn them on, there would be a small tendril of smoke coming out of the dash above the switch, and a very strong odor of burning plastic.

Now the headlights do not work at all, and still the smoke when it's been on for a little while.

The parking lights and everything else seem to work just fine, and a sight inspection under the hood reveals no broken or worn wires showing.

Could it be something as simple as the headlight switch?

It is a 1996 Jeep Cherokee, 4 cyl.

I checked the lights at lunchtime today, and the didn't come on when I pulled the switch, until after I turned on the high beams. Then the low beams worked, too. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to sit with them on to see if it started smoking again.

94 is to old for any modules. So I would pull the connector off the switch and inspect it for any sign of melting or burning wires, if it looks OK change the switch.
