Sometimes won't start, but after sitting a little while, it starts. The engine light came on after the first time and the code is a cam sensor. The mechanic didn't think that was causing it not to start. This does not happen all the time.

The check engine light is on because you have a failure and it was identified as cam sensor
of course it will effect the engine and starting it
you have a problem you now where to start
I would fix the code as a 1st step
