The “ABS” (antilock breaking systems) light will “light” when there is a malfunction in the braking system. The fault code is then stored in the computer. The computer must be scanned to retrieve these stored faults to pinpoint the malfunctioning component. Because the ABS light indicates something is wrong, a trip to you neighborhood automobile service center sooner rather than later is recommended. Your ABS system may not be functioning.

Suggested Repair

Have the ABS computer scanned for stored fault codes and take the car to a service center promptly, since a braking-system fault may mean the ABS is not functioning.

Conversation Summary

The owner of a 1994 Jaguar XJS with about 100,000 miles reports no brake pressure after hard stops, including one while parked downhill. There are no leaks and the fluid level is normal, but the driver-side brake had been pulling, the handbrake light stays on, ABS did not work, and a click is heard near the shifter when the pedal is pressed with the engine running. The expert says an ABS warning indicates a stored braking-system fault and recommends scanning the computer and having a shop inspect it soon.
