clanking noise when accelarating

My 16 yr. old son owns a 4 cylinder 1996 Hyundai Elantra with 98,000 miles. He tells me that when he starts to accelerate the car makes a clanking noise and then when he reaches a speed of 55mph + the noise stops. Can you give me any ideas to look for. He had to replace his starter about 1 month ago. My son says that this noise is coming from the front end of the car. Thank you in advance for your replies. I can't get his absent father to help me or even look at it. Thank God for people like all of you!!!

Without hearing it's hard to say. Hopefully it isn't pinging. More inclined to think a haeatsheild that is loose. Bang on the exhaust with a rubber mallet in various places and see if anything rattles.

Did you try rapping on the exhaust?

IF this is a heavier noise, it may be the sheild that is on the engine that covers the flywheel (also where the starter is-maybe it was bent? ) at the transmission.

Try this, put the parking brake on and put your foot on the brake pedal then rev the motor with the accelerator pedal and see if the nosie starts up; look for the source. You need 2 people for this.
