Other than disconnecting my battery to avoid it draining, what should I do?
Thanks in advance for any replies

Sounds like the problem may be the brake light switch. Sometimes the switch is adjustable am nd may just need to be readjusted. If it is not the adjustment then the switch may be defected. It is located on the brake pedal under the dash. Good luck. Backyardmechanic :)

It was in fact related to the switch. On the break pedal shaft there was a white plastic washer which makes contact with the swith. That washer had fallen off.
I replaced it with a bumper stop, total cost 85 cents.
