I have an 87 Civic with only 130k miles on it. It runs great other than a few normal things here and there. Tune ups, oil changes, etc. Out of nowhere last night, the back of the car started making a lot of noise, like a gurgling.I'm guessing coming from the muffler? I drove about 15 minutes home from work with the noise constant the whole way. Today I drove the car for about an hour running errands, the noise is not going away. To look at the back, the muffler might be sitting lower than it used to. But I can't tell if I'm just seeing things. I havent bumped the bottom of the car or have any body damage that would cause it to start out of nowhere. Any ideas?

I would get a friend to help you and start the car. Let it run, have the car with two wheel on the same side up on a curb. One person crawls under the car and the other using a big rag plugs the tailpipe. You are looking for leaks and holes and this will enable to to hear them as well. Don't stop there but continue to the front of the car as well.

I can try that, but I am concerned that the muffler is coming off of the car. How likely is it that I will be driving and hear klunk klunk and see the muffler lying in the road in the rearview mirror? I wont be able to have anyone look at it for a few days, but I still need to drive it. Is it safe enough?

You can crawl under the read of the car an visually inpect the muffler. Lay under and push up gently. If you see any play or movement, yes you could hear and see the muffler fall off.
