You need to check where the coolant leak is coming from and not jumping the gun by thinking too far ahead.

Hey, do not worry too much about your 2005 Civic. If you keep it properly maintained, you should not have to worry about the overheating issues. The issues of over-heating were more relevant to the earlier Civic's.

Just like any car if you do not take care of problems promptly, problems become bears to handle.

Your should get someone who really knows about your civic to check it out (Maybe the dealer even though expensive). If your smelling it (the anti-freeze) then it is most likely externally leaking. Your other issues can be caused by a faulty Thermostat and heater core.
Also, if you keep driving it like that long enough, your head-gasket will go.

The 2005 Civic is a fabulous car when taken care of.

Upon further examination it was indeed the head gasket. Honda mechanic concurred.
Yes the 2005 was a fabulous car. I bought a new 2013 Honda Civic. Lots of bells and whistles and better yet reliability.

My 2005 Honda Civic EX special edition is overheating. A mechanic replaced the radiator, thermostat, gasket, and coolant, but it continues to overheat. What is causing this?

Has it been checked for a bad head gasket? With blowing the radiator cap off I would check it for a blown head gasket.

When the water pump fails they leak or seize up. Rent a chemical head gasket tester from auto zone its a free rental with deposit you just have to buy the chemical.

My car overheats when I turn the heater on, but goes back to normal operating temperature when I turn the A/C on. I have checked the fans, they are working fine. I have recently replaced the water pump, head gasket, timing belt, radiator has been flushed and I am working on my fifth thermostat.

Hi laurabelle3323,

When the overheating occurs, are the fans working at that time?

Do you have coolant losses issues?

The fans operates when the coolant temperature is able to activate the fan switch. If they are working and stopping intermittently then you do not have an overheating issue but rather a faulty reading indication. This could be a fault with the wiring or gauge.

My car overheats after driving sixty to one hundred miles when pulling in to the place I am going. What would cause this?

HI there,

If the temperature is basically stable on long drives and peaks when the car is shut off, of shows signs or over heating in traffic. I would first get the cooling fan system checked, as when you are driving there is normally enough natural air flow to keep the system under control and with low car speed this air flow decreases and with no fan the temperature will rise.

I replaced the thermostat and it overheats after driving for five minutes of regular speed. There is a lot of anti freeze in the overflow. Sometimes it does not overheat when driving short distances, but usually it does. What needs to be replaced? How much will it cost?

Absolutely not. If it was not dripping then I would worry. The water dripping is condensation running off of the evaporator core and there is a water drain built into the heater box to let it drain. Just like the A/C unit at a home that drips water, this is the same thing. Hope this helps.
