Had a friend of a friend come to me with an 02 4cyl ULEV Accord that would not rev past 4K rpms. Before I got the car, he had taken the head off and sent it to the machine shop. They said it had a burnt valve in #2, they replaced it and he slapped the head back on.

Car does the same thing, will not rev over 4K.

My questions are---
1)Why would it have a burnt valve?
2)Does this pertain to an EGR system malfunction?
3)Does this pertain to an electrical issue, or ignition?

I do not have the car in my possession yet, so I do not know if or what codes are set in the ecu. Please help! Thanks.

Hi P W B,

Before reaching the bridge how to cross it? Get the car and retrieve the error code before trying to rectify the problem.

There are so many possibilities and almost impossible to list all of them out.

MAP sensor, O2 sensor TP sensor etc can all cause the problem.

Valves sometimes get burnt when the clearance is too tight resulting in the valve not closing fully.
EGR normally causes the engine to holfd back at between 1800 to 2800 rpm.
It most probably a control issue.
