VTEC: F23A1 Engine.

Narrowed it to 2 possibilities: a) blown head gasket, and b) internal cracks in engine block. I'm told some engines of this era developed cracks between coolant & oil passages. My plan is to disassemble & inspect head gasket first and if it's bad then replace & reassemble, with new timing chain (it's due). If HG is OK, engine has to be replaced. Any feedback?

What you will probably find is that the headgasket is cracked or torn. You should also get the cylinder head re-surfaced and checked for cracks when it is off the engine.

Cylinder sleeve cracking is pretty rare on these vehicles, so it's most likely just a headgasket issue.

Goodluck.
