Problem is intermittent - happens in cold weather and hot. Typically happens when I run errands after work. After a 10-15 mile drive - majority freeway driving - I will make a quick stop - engine turned off for approx 5 mins. I will try to start engine it will turn over but won't catch and stay running. So I turn the ignition off and let it sit for a minute and try again. Usually it takes several tries before it starts normally and drives fine. The problem seems to be getting worse, but not necessarily more often. I have noticed the last few times that it has happened, the car would start but would not feel right while idling in park and the D4 on the dashboard will flash. The first time I noticed that the D4 on the dashboard was flashing and I tried to drive it, it felt like I trying to go up hill with the parking brake on (which it wasn't). So I stopped the car and turned off the engine. Tried to restart and it took several tries before starting ok. During 2 different episodes, the car started but immediately died, while going through the motions of trying to get it to start. The car does not ever die while driving (such as being stopped at a stop light). I believe it happened once only after having sat for several hours. Never happens in the morning at a cold start. Any suggestions? Thank you for your time!

Hi zwoman97526,

Thank you for the donation.

The symptoms described seems to indicate a faulty PGM-FI main relay. This item is known to fail intermittently causing non starts. Get it checked and if possible, resolder the circuit board.

The D4 blinking could be related to the relay but then again it could be another different problem. Retrieve the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) to see if it indicates anything.

Use a jumper wire to bridge the SCS connector and count the blinking of the D4 light to retrieve the Code.
