Probably blew up the speakers. Take an ohm meter (or multi-meter that measures resistance or go to your local RadioShack) and place the positive to the red wire and the negative to the black wire on the speaker. On the back of the speaker it will tell you how many ohms it is rated for (A number and then an Omega symbol) -- If the resistance is lower than the number on the speaker (typically 4 or 8 ohm) then you blew the speakers.

Let me know if they check out okay.

If they are indeed blown, make sure you install high-pass filters on the wires to prevent your bass from blowing up your new set.

Suggested Repair

Test each speaker with an ohm meter by measuring resistance between the positive and negative wires and comparing it to the ohm rating on the speaker (typically 4 or 8 ohms). If the reading is lower than the rating, the speakers are blown and should be replaced. When installing new speakers, add high-pass filters on the speaker wires so bass does not damage them.

Conversation Summary

The owner reported crackling from the speakers followed by total speaker failure, while the amplifier, subwoofers, and head unit still worked and the connections looked fine. The expert said the speakers were likely blown and recommended checking resistance with a multimeter against the rated impedance. If the speakers are blown, they should be replaced and high-pass filters installed to keep bass from damaging the new speakers.
