I changed the fuel pump recentlly and things started to happen. The fuse, 15a, for the slot"ecomb" burns out . There is a short or other problem. When we pull this fuse out the fuel pump will not work. The problem is the circut the pump is on. I find no wires bare or cut. Can there be a problem with the new pump or with the fuel level system? My Astro Van is 1992 ,4.3, cargo van :)

The fuel pump relay comes on for 3-9 seconds to prmne the fuel system. When the vehicle starts the fuel pump circuit goes though the oil pressure switch and down to the fuel pump. It is a 16 gauge light gray wire. It could be any of those items included a shorted pump. Hopefully you didn't cross the wires on the pump as that would blow fuses. Good Luck

Suggested Repair

Check that the new fuel pump wires were not crossed, and inspect the fuel pump relay, oil pressure switch, and the 16-gauge light gray wire feeding the pump. A shorted replacement pump can also blow the fuse.

Conversation Summary

After a recent fuel pump replacement on a 1992 Astro van, the 15A ECOMB fuse blows and the pump will not run with that fuse removed. No bare or cut wires were found. The expert explained that the relay primes the system for a few seconds, then power runs through the oil pressure switch on a light gray wire, and that a shorted pump or crossed pump wires could blow the fuse.
