The truck sat gas gummed up. Replaced gas fuel pump fuel filter sending unit and spark plugs. The fuel pump has power going to it but not enough power to send the fuel to start. No breaks in wires.

Hi,

How much voltage is reaching the fuel pump? It should be 12v or battery voltage.

Also, have you checked to make sure the throttle body injectors are not plugged? If you haven't, you may want to consider disconnecting the fuel line between the pump and throttle body and blow compressed air through it. It could be gummed up internally or even the fuel injectors could be plugged.

Let me know your thoughts.

Hi,

If you have power to the sending unit, the pump should have it as well. When you checked for power, was the connector disconnected and you used a separate grounding location?

If you did, you may not have a ground. If you look at the connector at the sending unit, first make sure the connector pins are not damaged. Also, there should be a black wire for ground. Confirm there is continuity to ground from that wire. Keep in mind, if you use a test lamp or multimeter, you may find ground. If the connection is weak or corroded, the load of the motor could cause it to fail.

Let me know what you find.

Joe

Believe it or not it was just a fuse in the truck that a friend put in. Did all that extra troubleshooting for nothing. Have another question! Can a carburetor be cleaned without removing it or starting it?

Hi,

If the carburetor needs to be cleaned, everything is internal other than the throttle plate you can clean it with carburetor cleaner. However, it would be best to do this while the engine is running at idle.

I'm glad to know you got the fuel pump issue resolved. Let me know if anything changes or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe

The vehicle still will not start. I have fuel going all the way to the carburetor then it stops. You can see fuel being sprayed in it but it's like the carburetor cannot pick it up. So I need to know how I can clean without starting it I'm pretty sure the fuel lines going from the carburetor need to be cleaned out too!

Hi,

Where do you see fuel spraying? As far as the fuel not getting into the carburetor, there is a needle and seat that may be stuck shut.

You know, after I wrote the above two sentences, something clicked. This truck doesn't have a carburetor. It has a throttle body injection system (TBI). If you see fuel spraying from the injector, it should do something. If it doesn't, either you have no spark to the plugs, low compression, or we have a timing-related issue. Is it possible for you to record it cranking and upload it for me to hear?

Have you checked for spark? If not, here is a link that explains how to do it:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-for-ignition-spark

Let me know what you find. Also, if you have no spark, remove the spark plugs because they are likely soaked with fuel.

Let me know what you find or if you have questions.

Joe
