This can be a few different issues. The idea that you need to prime it sounds like it could be fuel related. Have you checked the fuel pump pressure? If not, that is where I would start.

Also, if the check engine light stays on when it starts, we really need to retrieve diagnostic trouble codes. If the vehicle is drivable, most parts stores will do it for you free of charge. If it isn't, see if you can get your hands on one to check.
