I have a 1997 Ford Taurus 3.0L SOHC. During my last smog test I failed with a PO340 trouble code. I was curious if it could mean anything else than a bad camshaft position sensor?

It sure could and probably does. Under the cam sensor is a syncronizer that is also probably bad. A window gets bent on the syncronizer that wipes out the sensor as well. You'll need a special tool to change that.
