Transmission problem
1999 Ford Taurus 6 cyl Automatic 150000 miles

I have a 99 ford taurus se model and encountering a problem. Whenever I take off in drive sometimes its having a hard time catching 2nd gear and the rpm's will sky rocket until I let go of gas and then it will put itself into 2nd gear and then have no problems the rest of the way. Its only the 2nd gear it does that to. Do you know what the problem could be?

It could be a bad shift solenoid or TCM. Have any warning lights come on?

Thanks for answering my question. But no no warning lights have come on as of yet. Just a low coolant warning light but I checked water level and its good. Just really worried about if its a transmission problem?

When you say the RPM's skyrocket, does it seem to be in neutral or does it continue to stay in first gear?

Well it does seem like when its in neutral when u accelerate. However, in this case I would have to say it stays in first gear and rpm's will keep going higher and higher as you keep ur foot on gas pedel, but once you let off gas rpm will go back down to about 2,000 and between 3,000 then it will kick into 2nd gear.

Honestly, it sounds like a bad shift solenoid. Have that checked first and let me know what you find.
