1999 Ford Taurus 6 cyl

Over the weekend I replaced the alternator and battery. It drove around for a couple days then died again. I just took the alternator back because we checked it and it was bad. We tested the new alternator to make sure it was a good one and it was. We reinstalled it and the car starts with a jump but when we take the cables off it wont hold the charge. Everything is installed right so we don't know what the problem is. Any ideas?

Is there anyway to check the fuses without a handy tool? Perhaps by removing them? I saw the 175 amp fuse but can't really take it out.

I actually just spoke with my cousin who works at a paint a body shop. He said it still soudns like a bad alternator even though it said it was good. He said he bought 4 bad parts from Kragen before and NONE worked. Do you think this is possibly the case? If so. Where can I purchase a reliable alternator?
