I have a 97 ford taurus gl with about 70k milles. I took it to the dealer to get the oil changed and they told me that my front sway bar was loose. when I got home i looked at the sway bar and all the connections seemed secure. The bushings looked good too. Is there something i'm missing here or was the mechanic just messing with me?

It's likely the bushings need replacing based on year of vehicle anyway.
Why don't you have the mechanic explain to you why they feel the bushings need replacing. They owe you an explanation if they are telling you they are in need of replacement.
These are quick money makers for mechanics.
If you don't notice any driveability problems then....?
